Background

Bangladesh Silk Research and Training Institute (BREGPRAI) is the only national institution for developing advanced technology and creating skilled manpower for the development of silk sector in Bangladesh.

This institute was established on January 3, 1962 as Silk cum Lac Research Institute and Silk Technological Institute in Rajshahi city.

When Bangladesh Silk Board was established in 1978, it came under Bangladesh Silk Board and was renamed as Bangladesh Silk Research and Training Institute (BSRTI). 25 of 2003. Bangladesh Silk Research and Training Institute is a member of National Agriculture Research System (NARS) under Ministry of Agriculture as per Bangladesh Research Council Act 2012. March 6. Bangladesh Silk Development Board was formed by merging Bangladesh Silk Board, Bangladesh Silk Research and Training Institute and Bangladesh Silk Foundation in Law No. 13.

Vision: To develop the organization into a dynamic organization with the objective of providing research and development assistance to organizations associated with the silk industry for the development of the silk industry in the country.

OBJECTIVE: To enhance the sericulture industry significantly by increasing productivity through innovation of advanced technology.

Activities of the organization

Collection and preservation of mulberry and silkworm varieties in germplasm bank

. Development of high yielding mulberry and sericulture varieties suitable for climate

. Soil physico-chemical quality analysis and mulberry leaf nutrient determination

. Development of advanced mulberry cultivation technology to improve the quality and increase production of mulberry leaves

. Development of advanced breeding technology to improve the quality and increase the production of silkworms

. Disease control of bamboo and silkworms and pest control. Development of technology related to commercial use of silk by-products

. Technological innovation aimed at improving the quality of silk yarn and increasing production

. Providing training in short and long term courses on various subjects with the aim of creating skilled manpower in silk industry

. Technology transfer at field level.

Research Branch

Bangladesh Silk Research and Training Institute has 5 research branches namely- 1. Mulberry cultivation, 2. Silkworm, 3. Seri-Chemistry, 4. Seri- Pathology, 5. There is a silk technology wing and a training wing. Besides, BSRTI has a Regional Sericulture Research Center at Chandraghona in Rangamati Hills District and a Germplasm Maintenance Center at Sakoa in Panchagarh District.

What is silk?

Silk is a fine and soft fiber woven from the cocoons of silkworms belonging to the class Bombyx mori. This yarn is produced commercially by rearing silkworms in special systems. Silkworms are actually the caterpillars of silk moths, whose only food is mulberry leaves. The method of rearing silkworm cocoons is called sericulture. . Garments made from silk include Saree, Kameez, Three-piece, Lehenga, Veil, Shirt, Punjabi, Fatwa, Scarf, Handkerchief, Tie, Babywear etc. Another popular saree made of silk is Dhaka katan.
