The story of the grass-roots life of ordinary people, rich in the scent of the soil of rural Bengal,
is presented in this novel. Its episode numbers are three: Ballali-Balai, Am-Antir Bhempu and Akru Sangbad. Episode-number of three episodes is thirty-five. In this novel, on the one hand, Bibhutibhushan Banerjee has drawn a perfect and convincing picture of almost a century old Bangladesh; The poverty of the village-society, the desperate hunger, the generosity-narrowness, the terrible envy-hatred of the human character, the ugliness, the customs of the inhuman crew, almost nothing has been left out. On the other hand, through the novel’s central character Apu, he wants to show how beautiful this world-nature, people and life; He wanted to understand that there is no need for any extensive organization to survive in life, people can be promoted to a greater purpose of life even if they have simple materials.
