s first railway line was inaugurated on September 27, 1825 in Great Britain by the pioneering efforts of George Stephenson. In the middle of the 19th century, Lord Dalhousie, Viceroy of India, established railways in India. On 1 August 1849, the Great Indian Peninsular Railway Company established a railway line in Mumbai. The journey of railways in India began with the inauguration of the line on 16 April 1853. Eastern Bengal Railway. By extending the line from Calcutta to Ranaghat on 15 November 1862, the 53.11 km railway line from Darshana to Jagati was opened in present Bangladesh. At present 46 districts of the country are connected to the rail network.

Divisional Railways

■ Dhaka: 12 > > Narsingdi, Gazipur,. , Dhaka, Narayanganj, Tangail, Kishoreganj, Rajbari, Gopalganj, Faridpur, Shariatpur, Munshiganj and Madaripur.

■ Chittagong : 6 » Comilla, Feni, Brahmanbaria, Noakhali, Chandpur and Chittagong.

■ Rajshahi : 8 ➢ Sirajganj, Pabna, Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Natore, Bogra, Joypurhat and Naogaon.

■ Khulna: 5 Jessore, Khulna, Jhenaidah, Chuadanga and Kushtia.

■ Sylhet: 4 > Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Sunamganj.

Rangpur: 8 Panchagarh, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari,

Gaibandha, Thakurgaon, Rangpur and Kurigram. ■

Mymensingh : 3 Mymensingh, Jamalpur and Netrakona.

■ Barisal: Only Barisal division has no railway in any district.
