He first identified the dengue virus while working on dengue and sunflies in the Army Commission. He identified two serotypes of the virus, Dengue-1 and Dengue-2. Then in 1956, Dr. Ham and his colleagues identified two new dengue serotype viruses. They are named Dengue-3 and Dengue-4. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue was first detected in epidemic form around 1950 in the Philippines and Thailand. First seen in E Africa in 1952. Later spread to different Asian countries. Dengue fever was first observed in Bangladesh in 1962.

Symptoms of Dengue

The main symptom of dengue is ‘Jur’. Other symptoms include headache, rash, body aches, bone pain, eye pain, nausea, vomiting, loose stools, etc. Compared to previous years, the dengue outbreak has increased manifold this time. At the same time, there has been a change in the symptoms of dengue patients. For example, in many cases no rash is seen on the body even after 4-5 days of dengue. Again the level of fever is very low. Sometimes the symptoms are so mild that they can be mistaken for another viral infection. People with weakened immune systems, as well as those who have experienced dengue fever a second time, are at increased risk of developing dengue hemorrhagic fever.

What to do if you have dengue

Dengue is a viral disease carried by the Aedes mosquito. In case of this disease- • Eat more liquid food in addition to normal food. For example-

Saline, canned water, lemon juice, fruit juice, soup etc. • In case of fever, consult a doctor for dengue test.

  • If dengue is detected, take action as per doctor’s advice.

Dengue vaccine

In 1997, the French multinational pharmaceutical and healthcare company Sanofi began working on a dengue vaccine. This company released the world’s first dengue vaccine in the market. Sanofi’s Dengvaxia vaccine was first approved in Mexico on December 9, 2015. Then on 12 December 2018 the European Union (EU) approved. On May 1, 2019, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of ‘Dengvaxia’ in the United States. On the other hand, Japanese-pharmaceutical giant Takeda Pharmaceutical Company produces a vaccine called ‘Qdenga’. 22 August 2022 Indonesia first approved the vaccine. So far, Dengvaxia and Qdenga are approved in at least 20 countries.
