A new era began in the Dhaka-Chittagong railway line with the inauguration of the dual gauge double line. Through this, the entire railway from Dhaka to Chittagong is elevated to a double line. Dhaka-Chittagong is the busiest in the country. The length of the railway is 321 km. 124 km of Dhaka-Chittagong railway was upgraded to double line during the British period. From Laksam to Chinki Astana. 61 km double line was completed in April 2015. In February 2016, 64 km double line from Tongi to Bhairab Bazar was launched. is 6,504 crore project was approved by Ekne in 2014 to build dual gauge double line on 72 km railway from Laksam to Akhaura. Construction started on 1 November 2016. On 24 September 2022, the 25 km stretch from Comilla to Laksam was opened for train traffic. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) provided a loan of Tk 4,118 crore out of the total cost of the project for construction of double line and development of various railway stations. 1,359 crore loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
